Why should I consider teaching online after I have retired from years of teaching in a traditional setting?

As educators, we are always seeking ways to grow and to continue our lifelong learning. I hope that I can help you do that by sharing my experiences.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to get started?

To get started teaching online,  assess your credentials, goals, and subject interests. It's helpful to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and some teaching experience or certification, though requirements vary by platform and subject. You can enhance their skills by pursuing relevant certifications such as TESOL for English teaching or specialized online teaching programs, which focus on the practical application of knowledge for managing virtual classrooms

First Things First

  1. Choose the subject or niche you want to teach (e.g., K-12 subjects, adult education, ESL).

  2. Obtain or update necessary credentials, such as teaching licenses or online teaching certificates. Having certifications in several states can be very helpful, but many companies will help you obtain specific state certifications.

  3. Gain experience with online teaching tools and platforms. Online education companies will usually have a SIS (Student Information System) and an LMS (Learning Management System) in addition to applications such as SLACK, Blackboard, Navan, GPS, etc. )

  4. Apply to reputable online education providers or tutoring services.

What are some online education companies that are legitimate options?

Imagine Learning

K-12

Illinois Virtual Schools

Connections Academy

I am only including virtual learning programs for which I have personal knowledge. A quick Google search will provide many more options; however, I cannot vouch for their authenticity.  I will be adding to this list as I review/research additional programs. I will try to organize them by state.

Can I work another job while teaching online?

Absolutely! But...it also depends on if you have a full-time position, seasonal position, part-time position, or substitute position. I work full-time online but can seasonally score for Pearson or sub at our local high school. If I were part-time or retired with social security, it may change how often I can work outside of the virtual teaching environment.

Do you provide individual coaching?

This is something I am researching right now! I would love to be able to support individual teachers, both retired or just starting out. As a former 6-12 administrator, I have experience coaching and evaluating teachers so it might be a great fit!
